Locksmith Queens INC – Replace Keyless Entry Remote
Replacement keyless entry remotes have become a staple in our modern automotive world. Furthermore, their use has become as widespread as power windows. The remote is programmed to work with only one vehicle. When you acquire your car from the factory, it usually comes with a few remotes already programmed to be used with it. If these remotes get lost or stop working, it is possible to order more remotes that will work with your vehicle.
With the evolving automotive industry, we have found a myriad of ways to adapt, but as we become more and more innovative in this area of expertise, we encounter new problems.
Problems with Replacement Keyless Entry Remotes
What happens when you lose a remote or the original remote got damaged? Once a new remote is in your possession, it will have to be programmed to work with your vehicle. The way to do this pretty much depends on the model and make of your car. It might sound simple at first, but if your vehicle is a 2011 or above model, then there is no way to program the remote yourself. On the other hand, if you have a vehicle that was made between 2007-2010, it will be equipped with the vehicle information center. There are different methods for both. All vehicles from 2007 or earlier use the same type of keyless entry remotes.
Replacement Keyless Entry Remote Programming – Car with VIC (2007-2010 GM vehicles)
So how do you actually program a replacement keyless entry remote? Locksmith Queens INC in Queens, NY has broken down the programming into four stages.
Here is a breakdown of the replacement keyless entry remote programming stages:
Stage 1: Start your car. Get into the vehicle just like you would if you were about to drive somewhere. All doors must be shut and unlocked. Make sure the transmission is in park.
Stage 2: Find the VIC button. There will be a button on either the entertainment center or the instrumental panel that bears the outline of a car with a letter “i” on it. It may only have the “i.” After finding this button, press and hold it down, this will result in the VIC displaying: Remote Key Learning Active.
Stage 3: Program the replacement keyless entry remote. Take the new remote and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for approximately 15 seconds. The VIC will sound a chime if the key is successfully programmed to work with your vehicle. You can program more than one replacement keyless entry remote.
Stage 4: Switch off your car, and try locking the vehicle with your new replacement keyless entry remote.
Replacement Keyless Entry Remote Programming – Car without VIC (2007-2010 GM vehicles)
What happens if you have a car without a VIC. Is it still possible to perform a replacement keyless entry remote programming? The answer is a resounding yes.
Step 1: Get into your vehicle, Turn the key to the Accessory (ACC) position. Make sure all your doors are closed and unlocked.
Step 2: Press the odometer stem. By the odometer, there will be a thin black stem sticking out. This can be twisted or pressed. Pressing this button will cause different functions to pop up on the display located on the base of the odometer. Keep on pressing till the following shows: Relearn Remote Key. Press and hold the stem now, and hold it down for 3 seconds. The screen should now read “Key Learning Active”.
Step 3: After steps 1&2, start programming your remote. Hold down the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds.
Step 4: Check if the new replacement keyless entry remote works by trying to lock your car.
Replacement Keyless Entry Remote Programming (GM vehicles made before 2007)
Lastly, we have car models that were made before 2007. Cars with pre-2007 models have a different way to program the replacement keyless entry remote, and we at Locksmith Queens INC will show you how.
Step 1: Get into the vehicle and close all doors. Afterward, put the car key inside the ignition but do not turn it at all.
Step 2: Press and hold the door unlock button on the driver’s side. Wait for the doors to lock and then unlock. While holding the button down, turn the key in the ignition until the dashboard lights up. Do not start the engine. The vehicle is now in accessory mode. Turn the vehicle back off. Then, repeat this process two more times: hold down the unlock button, wait for the doors to lock and unlock, then turn the key until the dashboard light up. If done correctly, the locks will cycle (lock, unlock) again when you release the unlock button to signify that the remotes can now be programmed.
Step 3: Program the replacement keyless entry remote. Hold down the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds.
Step 4: Test the replacement keyless entry remote.
